Restoration and Rehabilitation of Surviving River and Lakes in University Sains Malaysia

SITE PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

++ Along the river ++

1) Problem - The views are quiet pleasing and nice but a bit hard and rough looking.
Solution - The river should put some organic materials and meander shapes.
- Some organic material that probably can make this river more lively and attractive. Eg: build an artificial stone or a ferrossimen stone, sand bed, stepping stone, river stone or pebbles and a decking.
- Plant some flowery trees or shrubs to avoid the dullness but still remain the greenness and freshness.
- The river should flows in a meanders shape so that it will look more natural.
- Turned the 'drainage' river into a huge swale, so that visitor and student can enjoy the river while studying.

2) Problem - certain places along the river became hot in sunny day and if rainy day, does not have any nearest stopping point for shaded.
Solution - Plant shaded trees that have a huge canopy to shade certain places and build a wooden gazebos as well as pergolas or trellis. All the objects can enhance the activities and also the make the environment more lively.

3) Problems - utilities such as lamp post or bollard very minimal even certain places along the river doesn't exist.
Solution - Provide a new lamp post and bollard. Not only for safety but for attract the student to use the river wisely.

4) Problems - facilities such as walkways, dustbin are not in good condition. handrail along the drainage river are not in good condition
Solution - Provide walkways along the river that very potential for student to use it especially along the pharmacist faculty.
- Remove handrail and build a huge and shallow swale to let the student walking towards it and fell the real river.

1) Problem - erosion occurred and the slope of the shore line are too steep, difficult to maintain the growing grass.
Solution - fill the spaces between the roots with soil and plant the natural plants and also fill the land with suitable ratio 1:3.

2) Problem - the lake are very smelly and dirty. The water are not crystal clear and did not flow gently because of retentions at the tips of Aman Lake and in between both lakes.
Solution - Plants some of the aquatic plants to make the river clean and crystal clear. Introduce some of the fragrant trees to avoid the smelly smells.

3) Problem - A lot of dangerous pests such as monitor lizard and termite. Too many species in the lakes and no proper habitats for this species.
Solution - remove and reduce the pests and send it to Jabatan Perhilitan. Provide a sanctuary or a proper habitat for this animal.

4) Problem - Views from outside not interesting as inside because of ugly wall, flat and buildings.
Solution - Built an attractive feature wall or plant high and bushy trees to cover view from outside.

5) Problem - The total lamp post is not enough, does not provide any dustbin, not enough shaded area and seating area. Vey limited activities and less exercise equipment. Does not provide any toilet and we did not concern the facilities of disable people (OKU). The stairs does not placed in suitable places, no handrail, no proper ratio and obstruct by trees.
Solution - Provide more lamp post and introduce a variety of lighting features. Proposed a mobile toilet and provide more dustbin as well as exercise equipment, built a ramp for disable people. Provide pergolas, gazebos and benches.find a suitable places to replace the stairs.
